Rio Grande City's annual event, Viva Mexico, has been selected as one of the five finalist for the Best Promotional Event Achievement Award by the Texas Downtown Association's 2018 President's Award Program.
The nomination for the award came after an application was submitted to the Texas Downtown Association (TDA) by Rio Grande City Main Street program coordinator Nancy Perez. The Viva Mexico event was created in 2015 by the RGC Tourism Department to serve as a celebration of the region's cultural heritage.
"When we first came up with the idea for the Viva Mexico celebration 3 years ago, we had no idea it would become the largest and most popular city-hosted event of the year so quickly," stated RGC Tourism Dept. director Sara Hernandez. "I'd like to thank everyone who helps make the event possible year after year. Since we unfortunately had to cancel our celebration this year due to inclement weather, we are now even more motivated to make next year's event the biggest one yet."
According to the TDA website, 111 entries were submitted to the awards program in twelve different categories from communities across the state. Judges reviewed entries online and then met in person to make their final selection of award finalists and winners.
Award winners, along with Downtowner of the Year and the recipient of the Susan H. Campbell Award for Professional Excellence, will be announced on November 7 at the President’s Awards Gala held in conjunction with the 2018 Texas Downtown Conference in Corpus Christi.
