County of Starr Moves to Raise Awareness of Youth Summer Meals Programs

A press release from the County of Starr reports County Judge Eloy Vera and the Commissioners’ Court proclaim June and July as Summer Meals Awareness Months with the signing of a proclamation to highlight awareness of Summer Meals for students.

 

WHEREAS, It is estimated that one in four Texas children faces food insecurity, and Summer Food Service Program meals can help children stay healthy and prepare them to return to school ready to learn and thrive and

WHEREAS, Starr County Summer Meals Program has served many children in the community; and

WHEREAS, the Healthy Summer Meals Program in partnership with the Texas Department of Agricultural Commission (TDA), ensures that all children have a healthy breakfast and lunch during the summer months when most are out of school; and

WHEREAS, the programs are dedicated to the health and well-being of our nation’s residents” reads the proclamation.

 

Mrs. Patsy Ramirez-RGCCISD Food Nutrition Director and Mr. J.J. Trevino-Food and Nutrition Director from Roma ISD were present to thank the Commissioners’ Court for supporting the summer meals programs and for proving awareness as to the importance of nutritional meals for students.

 

 

Mrs. Elaine Hernandez-Med, MPH Regional Direction for the Texas Hunger Initiative program out of Baylor University was on hand to congratulate Starr County Judge Eloy Vera and Commissioners for providing the leadership to ensure awareness of the importance of nutritional meals for students. Hernandez also commended the Roma ISD and Rio Grande City CISD and all other entities who provide summer meals in the county.

 

Hernandez applauds the efforts that are being made in Starr County to ensure that food is available for residents. Judge Eloy Vera thanked Mrs. Ramirez, Mr. Trevino and Mrs. Hernandez and all their staff for their efforts in promoting awareness to residents on the availability of food to ensure that no one in Starr County goes hungry. Vera also recognized the efforts of Representative Ryan Guillen for always being a strong supporting force for school meals. The wellbeing of students is extremely important to Starr County Officials and they promote nutritional programs throughout the county which are conducive to healthy living.
